Boards & Commissions.

As a resident, there are a lot of opportunities to get involved in your city. See the descriptions below of all boards and commissions that help to guide the city forward.

 

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is responsible for reviewing rezoning, planned unit developments, preliminary and final subdivision plats, street and alley vacations, street name changes, and then forwarding recommendations to the City Council for final action.

Records Commission

The Records Commission is responsible for reviewing retention schedules. Each department has records retention schedules that specifies the types of records the department handles and the appropriate length of time the records are needed to document their functions.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) hears requests for variances as relief from statutes of the zoning ordinance and hears appeals to decisions made by the Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB), regarding the issuance or denial of a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA).

Board of Revisions

The Board of Revisions of Assessments hears all claims and objections regarding improvements to be paid for in part or in whole by special assessments.

Nuisance Appeals Board

The Nuisance Appeals Board hears appeals made by property owners (or a legal representative) who have timely filed an appeal after having received a notice of violation in connection with the Housing and Property Maintenance codes and renders a decision to uphold the violation or accept the appeal with conditions the appellant has requested and/or conditions the board requires.

Architectural Design Review Board

It is the responsibility of the ADRB to review the plans, monitor the work, and administer the Architectural Conservation/Historic District section (Section 2600) of the Hamilton City Zoning Ordinance.

 

17STRONG Advisory Board

As a subcommittee of Council, the purpose of 17STRONG is to provide a framework for communication and sense of identity and to rally individuals, groups, and other organizations to take pride in their particular corner of our city.

Civil Service Commission

The Hamilton City Charter places most of the positions in the city government within the classified civil service. Basic merit principles are set forth in the Charter and are supplemented by rules and regulations developed by the Civil Service Commission.

Utility Appeals Board

The Utility Appeals Board may hear cases regarding utility billing and penalties and affirm, reverse, or modify the decision made by the Utility of Finance Director on the appeal.

Tree Board

The Tree Board is charged with advising the City Council and administration on matters related to the City’s urban forest.

Public Utilities Commission

The City of Hamilton Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is charged with advising the City Council and administration on matters related to the City’s municipal utility operations.

Board of Health

The Health Board shall study, advise, and record the prevalence of disease within the City and as to all matters pertaining to all local public health and sanitation.

 

Ordinance Review Commission

The Ordinance Review Commission is responsible for reviewing and discussing proposed ordinances that may have a significant impact on quality of life in the City of Hamilton and to provide additional opportunities for Council and public input in the development stage.

Youth Commission

The Hamilton Youth Commission provide a proactive and responsive voice for the youth of the community, and further grant to them the opportunity to secure and maintain a formal role in planning the future of the City.

Charter Review Commission

The purpose of the Commission is to evaluate the entirety of the City’s Charter and make recommendations to City Council regarding any potential amendments.

Income Tax Review Commission

The Tax Review Commission, established by Ohio Revised Code Section 718.11, hears appeals of any taxpayer within the City that has been issued an assessment or decisions of the Tax Administrator.

Traffic Commission

The Traffic Commission coordinate traffic activities, carry on education activities in traffic matters, supervise the preparation and presentation of traffic reports, receive complaints having to do with traffic matters, and recommend ways and means for improving traffic conditions.

Hamilton Community Authority

City Council approved the formation of Hamilton Community Authority, naming a City Representative and three Citizen members to the Board of Trustees. The Hamilton Community Authority will be instrumental in the redevelopment efforts of the Champion Mill.

 

Diversity & Inclusion Commission

The purpose of the Diversity and Inclusion Commission shall be to study internal and external barriers to diversity and inclusion and provide recommendations regarding such barriers.
