Power outages can happen at any time. Despite regular system maintenance and improvements, the City’s electric system can be impacted by Mother Nature and human activity. And yet, evident by its Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3®) Diamond Designation, the Electric Department prides itself on maintaining safe and reliable service and responding quickly when service interruptions do occur.

Across the entire United States, the top three leading causes of power outages are:

  • 70% weather-related events, like heavy wind, lightening strikes, and ice storms

  • 11% animals, such as squirrels and birds, contacting power lines

  • 4% automobile and other vehicle accidents

Report a Gas Leak

If you smell gas, suspect a gas leak, or notice excessive gas pressure contact the City’s Emergency Utility Service at 513.785.7550 – available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – or call 911 to alert emergency first responders.

Be aware that the source of a gas odor could be inside your home/business or external - gas leaks in service lines or street mains can migrate into your home or business. In addition to the smell of gas, other signs to watch for include:

  • Blowing dirt, bubbling water, ice formation, or an unusual area of distressed or dead vegetation on the ground above where a pipeline is located

  • Hissing sound near a pipeline, or in or around a building

Also, if your pilot light or burner is substantially higher than normal, this may be an indicator of excessive gas pressure.
